SAS cable lengths
The StoreOnce implementation uses Managed Cables, making it easier to identify faults. The StoreOnce
software verifies that the correct length SAS cables are being used. Mini-SAS HD connectors are used
throughout.
SAS cables should ‘click’ and lock into position when correctly inserted. Three cable lengths are
available. The maximum supported cable length is 2 m.

NOTE:
To facilitate future expansion, HPE recommends using 2m SAS cables to connect from the server to
Drawer 2 of the disk enclosure. For this reason, the base system of one server and one disk enclosure is
supplied with two 0.5 m cables and two 2.0 m cables.
Installation pre-requisites
1.
Decide which installation scenario best suits your environment.
2.
Plan for future expansion. Capacity expansion is an online activity, but only if a SAS cabling
connection is maintained at all times. See also the

3.
Make sure there is sufficient space to fully extend Drawer 2 from the rack and access the disk bays at
the rear of the drawer.
4.
Take time to label enclosures and disk drives. If facilities do not support heavy lifting, it may be
necessary to remove drives before installing the enclosure and it is important to re-install drives in the
same bay location.
Installation scenarios
Two installation scenarios are recommended for customers who self-install the StoreOnce 5500 System
into their own racks.
•
Up to two enclosures above and two enclosures below the head server.
This configuration
provides equal weight distribution in the rack. Ensure that there is a 1U support shelf above the head
server to protect it from the weight of the disk enclosures. You may also position a 1U support shelf
below the lowest enclosure in the rack.
