5-56 FRU Removal and Replacement

5.5.22

Memory Board Removal and Replacement (Model 400s)

Refer to Figure 5-40 and follow these steps to remove a memory board:

1. Remove the top and left side cover. Then, remove the CPU board.

2. Identify (using the failing memory address) the specific memory board to re-

move. Refer to chapter 4.

3. Using a flat-tipped screwdriver, pry each end of the memory board up a little at

a time until it is clear of the card guide.

4. Remove the memory board.

5. If you are replacing the CPU board, remove the memory board guides by slid-

ing them toward the back. Then, lift their tabs out of the CPU board’s holes.

If you have replaced the CPU board and are moving the memory modules from the old

CPU board to a new one, place the memory modules in the same slots on the new CPU

board as they were on the old CPU board.

Memory modules have several restrictions regarding their installation:

• You may replace one module of a pair, but modules of the same size must be

installed in pairs.

• There can be no empty slots between modules or module pairs.

• The largest size pair must be in slots 0A and 0B.

• Each higher numbered slot pairs must have equal sized or next smaller sized

memory boards used in the system unit.

Follow these steps to replace a memory board:

1. If you are replacing the CPU board, install the memory board guides by placing

their tabs in the CPU board holes. Then, sliding them towards the front, locking

them in place.

2. Insert the memory board, with its connector side towards the back, into the

connector.

3. Firmly seat the memory board in its CPU board connector.

4. Ensure the board guides are straight and correctly holding the sides of the

memory boards.
