Diagnostic Summary for HP-UX Compatible Mode
Several levels of operations exist within systems that run in HP-UX compatible mode.
Each level has diagnostic or error reporting capabilities:
• The Boot ROM level has
– Self Tests
– Test Mode
• Series 300 Test Tools have
– Computer Tests
– System Functional Tests
– CS/80 Disk Tests
• HP-UX has ce.utilities.
4.9
Boot ROM Self-Tests
When the system unit first powers up, the CPU starts executing Boot ROM code. Be-
fore code is executed to boot an operating system, you need to set up and test several
things. The Boot ROM has several code segments to manage these responsibilities.
4.9.1
Hardware Initialization Support
Some hardware, such as video board initialization and floating RAM positioning, must
be immediately initialized at power-up to prevent improper operation.
4.9.2
FRU Go/No-Go Self-Test Support
Because of several factors such as current hardware design, limited code space and the
fact that testing for unknown or unexperienced failures is virtually impossible, Boot
ROM self-tests may not always handle all hardware failures correctly.
Several “UNEXPECTED” failure messages may be displayed at any time. When the
CPU executes an instruction set, certain events are expected to occur. Should an inter-
rupt (either internally from the CPU or externally from some other device) occur and
cause a RAM or CPU address to be used out of sequence, the system displays the fol-
lowing error message
