Savoy SL & LX 5th Wheel & Travel Trailer
weight termS
The Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) of the axles listed on the federal certification label attached to the
recreational vehicle is the maximum allowable loaded weight on an axle. When the actual loaded weight of the
recreational vehicle and the weight on each axle is unknown, follow the recommended tire inflation pressure(s)
listed on the federal certification label. When loading a recreational vehicle never exceed the Gross Vehicle
Weight Rating (GVWR) or GAWR for each axle.
The
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)
and
GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating)
will show the chassis
manufacturer’s and/or the RV manufacturer’s total vehicle maximum weight ratings and per axle weight rating.
The GVWR is the maximum total weight for which the recreational vehicle is rated – including fluid and
cargo. The GAWR is the maximum for which a single axle is designed. These per axle and total maximum weight
ratings are limited by the tires, wheels, axle and axle bearings, the recreational vehicle frame or other components
of the recreational vehicle. The GAWR sticker is only a guide for maximum loaded axle weights and correct tire
inflation pressure. Every recreational vehicle, even of the same make and model, will vary in loaded axle weights
because of different options and personal loads.
While the actual loaded axle weight should be below the GAWR, the recreational vehicle must be weighed
in a loaded condition to know its actual weight. It is possible for a recreational vehicle to be within the GVWR
yet overloaded an the axle. It is possible for one wheel position to be overloaded, even though the GAWR has
not been exceeded. For this reason weigh each wheel position of the recreational vehicle. This will give a clear
indication of exactly how the weight of the recreational vehicle is distributed. These instructions and diagrams are
presented on the following pages. When the total weight and the weight on each axle is known, the “Tire Inflation
Chart” in this manual will show the correct cold inflation pressure per tire for each axle.
Consider two factors when loading the recreational vehicle:
total weight
and
balance
. When loading heavy
objects keep them as low as possible, preferably on the floor. Distribute load weight as evenly as possible. Listed
below are the commonly used weight abbreviations and terms.
• Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR):
GVWR means maximum permissible weight of the recreational
vehicle. GVWR is equal to or greater than the sum of UVW plus CCC.
• Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW):
UVW means weight of the recreational vehicle as built at factory.
UVW does not include cargo, fresh water, LP-Gas or dealer installed accessories.
• Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR):
GAWR means load-carrying capacity specified by manufacturer of
a single axle system as measured at tire ground interfaces.
• Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC):
CCC means the GVWR minus each of the following: UVW, full fresh
(potable) water weight (including water heater) and full LP-Gas weight.
