2006 Electrical Systems — Section 8 • 133
ElEctrical introduction
The recreational vehicle is equipped with 120 Volt AC and 12 Volt DC electrical systems that supply the
power to operate electrical appliances and equipment in the recreational vehicle. To hook up to 120 Volt power,
find grounded supply cord (shore line) and plug it into an outside 120 Volt power source. Switch the main breaker
ON. When the breaker is on, the 120 Volt system will energize all 120 Volt circuits and outlets. The power
converter automatically supplies 12 Volt DC power to necessary locations. When a 120 Volt power source is not
available, the recreational vehicle house battery provides 12 Volt DC current to the same points as the converter.
Changeover occurs automatically.
WARNING:
The electrical system is engineered and tested for complete safety. Circuit breakers and fuses
protect the electrical circuits from overloading. If modifications or additions to the electrical
system are planned, it is recommended to consult a dealer for assistance to ensure continued
integrity and safety of the electrical system. Any modifications may void the warranty.
WARNING:
Disconnect the 120 Volt AC electrical shore cord and the negative terminal from the 12 Volt
DC battery before working on the electrical system. Remove all rings, metal watch bands
and other metal jewelry before working around batteries and connector. Be cautious when
using metal tools. If a tool contacts a battery terminal, or metal connected to the battery
terminal, a short circuit could occur and cause personal injury, explosion, or fire.
CAUTION:
Before hooking up shore power, verify that proper voltage and ground protection is present.
After hooking up to shore power, verify that voltage and ground protection are present in
the recreational vehicle. Inexpensive testers are available.
AC System - 120/240 Volt
The recreational vehicle 120/240 Volt AC system is equipped with a UL listed power cord, a UL listed circuit
breaker panel and a converter. The AC system power requirement for the recreational vehicle is 120/240 Volt
AC single phase. This input power requirement to the recreational vehicle 120 Volt AC circuit breaker panel is
supplied from the shore power cord. Connect the recreational vehicle to the shore power source using the supplied
shore power cord. Ensure the power distribution panel is configured to handle the load. The shore power cord
plugs into the shore power source and can be fixed to the smaller amperage receptacles. This can be 20 Amp, 30
Amp or 50 Amp service.
Shore Power
The recreational vehicle is equipped with a shore power cord. The electrical cord connects the recreational
vehicle to outside electrical services. Shore power service is the most efficient source of electrical power. Use
this as the primary power source. The standard shore power cord is 30 Amp 120 Volt. The recreational vehicle
may be equipped with an optional shore power cord of 50 Amp 120/240 Volt. Certain models cannot be wired for
50 Amps. Many facilities are equipped with 50 Amp 120/240 Volt AC power service. When this type of power
service is not available electrical adapters will be required to allow a proper and safe connection to the electrical
service supply.
NOTE:
In instances when 50 Amp shore service is not available, care will have to be used when
operating the appliances and using the outlets so the shore power service will not overload.
