The Hasselblad XPan Panoramic Cameras

is correct at all distances. The rangeﬁ nder in the camera is also used for focusing the 30 mm
lens, but viewing is done with the special 30 mm viewﬁ nder that comes with the lens and is
attached to the ﬂ ash shoe.

The eyepiece in the camera’s viewﬁ nder has a

1 diopter correction. This standard eye-

piece can be exchanged for accessory eyepieces as described in Figure 20-9. When com-
posing panoramic images, be especially careful that important horizontal lines like a water
surface or vertical lines like those of a building are perfectly parallel to the frame lines unless
you want them slanted purposely.

COMPOSITION IN THE PANORAMIC FORMAT

Regardless of how you produce panoramic images (in the camera or computer) on ﬁ lm or dig-
itally, effective composition is very important; even more so than in an image in the standard
rectangular format. Panoramic images must include important elements that enhance the image
all the way from left to the right or from top to bottom. There must never be an empty area
that is considered unnecessary on either side or top or bottom of the image. Such areas make
the viewer question why the image was made in the panoramic format (see Figure 20-10).
The panoramic image must convey the feeling that the panoramic shape was necessary for
the subject or scene and that this subject or scene could not have made an effective image
in any other shape (see Figure 20-11). When evaluating the image in the viewﬁ nder or on the
computer screen, look all the way across the panoramic image to ascertain that the image
includes important elements all across the composition.

EXPOSURE CONTROL

The metering system built into XPan cameras measures the center area of the image.
Exposure information is shown in the viewﬁ nder including the shutter speed in the XPan II.
