THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL

HASSELBLAD FLASH UNITS

The Hasselblad D-Flash 40

The Hasselblad D-Flash 40 ﬂ ash unit (see Figure 18-13) is compact and lightweight and has a
guide number of 137 (40 in meters) in the N reﬂ ector position and 110 (33 in meters) in the
W position. The unit is designed for the dedicated ﬂ ash system in V camera models only. The
ﬂ ash reﬂ ector can be moved either to N for lenses 80 mm and longer or to W for use with
shorter focal length lenses. The reﬂ ector can also be removed for bare bulb use.

The power for the ﬂ ash can come from ﬁ ve AA batteries, ﬁ ve rechargeable AA NiCads, or

an external accessory power pack. The number of exposures per charge is 120 to 1200 from
regular AA batteries, 45 to 450 from rechargeable AA types, or 270 to 2250 from the external
power pack. The actual number of ﬂ ashes always depends on the distance between ﬂ ash and
subject.

Other Flash Units

The Hasselblad Pro Flash, the forerunner to the D-40, can be used on Hasselblad and other
cameras in the manual or automatic fashion. Shadowless lighting is obtained when light of
equal intensity reaches the subject from all directions. Such lighting is produced by a ring-
light. The Hasselblad macro ﬂ ash consists of two small ﬂ ash units mounted on a bracket
around the lens for practically shadowless lighting in close-up photography.
