THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL
The same mounting arrangement can be suggested when the 2
extender is used in combi-
nation with the CFE 120 mm Makro-Planar.
Bellows and 135 mm Makro-Planar Lens
The bellows in the V system with a minimum extension of 63.5 mm (2.2 in.) and a maximum
of 202 mm (8 in.) also allows moving the lens farther away from the image plane for close-
up photography. The bellows has a coupling shaft to maintain the mechanical camera and
lens connection but no electronic coupling. The meter reading in 200 cameras therefore must
be made with the lens aperture closed down. The 135 mm Makro-Planar is designed with a
special rear mount to bring the rear element closer to the image plane so the lens/bellows
combination can be used for photography at all distances from infi nity down to life-size mag-
nifi cation for the 2¼ fi lm format. The charts in this book provide all the needed information
for using the bellows with different focal length lenses for the 2¼ fi lm format. For digital
imaging the extension fi gures apply but the area coverage and magnifi cation is somewhat dif-
ferent because of the smaller sizes of the sensors. They can be calculated as described for the
V system close-up charts.
Close-Up Lenses
Any lens, fi xed focal length or zoom type, can also be used on any camera at closer distances
by attaching a positive lens element to the front of the camera lens. Such close-up lenses, also
called Proxar lenses, are designated by their focal length or diopter power. The 1 diopter lens
has a 1 m (39
1
/
2
in.) focal length, a 2 diopter type has a focal length of 0.5 m, and a 2 m focal
length is equal to 0.5 diopters.
Close-up lenses are not recommended for serious close-up work as they create a loss
of image sharpness on the corners. Proxar lenses are, however, still shown on the V system
close-up charts as P 1.0, P 0.5, and P 2.0. Indicated distances are measured from the Proxar
lens, not the image plane.
CLOSE-UP PHOTOGRAPHY WITH ALL HASSELBLAD CAMERAS
The single lens refl ex concept of all Hasselblad SLR cameras allows you to see in the view-
fi nder the image as it will be recorded on the digital sensor or on fi lm with any lens and
close-up accessory. This is true for all H cameras and all newer SLR models in the V system.
Earlier V system cameras without the gliding mirror concept have a cut-off at the top of the
focusing screen when close-up accessories are used. The cut-off appears only on the focusing
screen, not in the image. Allow for it when you make the composition. The focusing screen on
all the newer V models with the gliding mirror concept show the full image covered with any
lens and any close-up accessory.
Motor-driven fi lm advance with a built-in motor or motor winder accessory on 503 mod-
els eliminates the possibility of moving a tripod-mounted camera between shots and allows
you to take sequences of pictures. Locking up the mirror in critical close-up work is recom-
mended with any camera whenever practical.
