THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL

need for a battery on the digital back. If all your digital photography with a CF or CFV digital 
back is done with a computer, you do not need a battery on the digital back. When not con-
nected to a computer, the digital backs are powered from a 7.2 V Sony InfoLithium L type 
NP-F550 (or similar) battery available from Hasselblad and other sources.

On the CFV backs, the battery slides directly into the bottom of the digital back. Push the 

battery toward the camera where it depresses the battery-retaining catch. Push the battery 
in completely, which returns the safety catch to the original position. To remove the battery, 
depress the battery-retaining catch. Charge the battery before attaching it to the digital back.

With CF backs, you must remove the protective plate at the bottom of the camera before 

you can attach the battery. The battery is attached and removed as described above. If you 
want an EL camera model powered from a battery for portable use with any digital back, you 
must attach the supplied adapter EL to the digital back the same way you attach a battery. The 
battery is then attached to the adapter. This is necessary as the motor housing of the camera 
extends beyond the camera body.

Regardless whether any digital back is powered from a battery or from a computer, the 

power to the digital back is turned on and off with the ON/OFF button. The digital back goes 
to a power saving Standby mode after a certain time.

H3DII Battery Warning Signals

When battery power on H3DII cameras falls below a certain level, fl ashing  yellow  icons 
appear on the preview screen. The signal on the top right of the screen indicates that the 
power in the camera batteries is low. Audible signals can also be heard at that point. A signal 
on the top left indicates that the batteries in the Image Bank are low. Both signals change to 
red when the batteries are completely exhausted. The battery warning icons can only be red 
if the back is powered via FireWire.

Power Saving Options

Naturally you want to save as much battery power as possible so re-charging the battery is 
kept to a minimum, or just so you can take more pictures before re-charging becomes neces-
sary. Reduce the length of time the camera stays in active state to the minimum that is practi-
cal for your operating method or the type of subject that you are photographing. In the User 
Interface menu you can set the Power Down, which is the same as depressing the ON/OFF 
switch on the camera. It can be set from 3–99 minutes. The default setting is NEVER and it is 
suggested to leave it there.

Since so much power is consumed by the preview screen, turn on the screen only when 

needed. The time of the display can be set with custom option Standby Timeout from 2–30 
seconds. Set it to the minimum time that is practical for your photography. After the set time is 
reached the display turns off, but the back is still running and responds instantly by pressing a 
button. Never select None. In the Standby mode the camera consumes little power. When work-
ing with the digital sensor unit connected to a computer the screen is automatically turned off.

You can also reduce power consumption by reducing the brightness and/or contrast of 

the screen images. This is done with the same option in User Interface. Unless needed it is
