THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL

On 200 model cameras, electronically controlled long exposures up to 90 seconds can be

made with the focal plane shutter. For even longer exposures, up to 34 minutes, you can use
the focal plane shutter in the Manual Exposure mode.

DISTANCE SETTING

Lenses in the V system have large rubberized focusing rings that are far enough away from
the camera body so they can easily be reached and operated.

The focusing ring on apochromatic lenses can be turned a few millimeters beyond the

inﬁ nity point because the ﬂ uorite elements in these lenses are more sensitive to changes in
temperature than glass elements. The distance settings therefore may vary slightly depending
on the temperature. Always visually focus the image on the focusing screen; do not guess the
distance or simply set the scale at inﬁ nity if the subject is far away.

RELEASING THE 503 AND OTHER V SYSTEM CAMERA MODELS

Camera steadiness is greatly determined by the way you operate the release. Push it slowly
and gradually so that you hardly know when the exposure is made. For the smoothest opera-
tion, move the release to the halfway position so that only a slight additional pressure makes
the shutter click. On 200 camera models with built-in metering systems, pressing the release
halfway also turns on the metering system.

The Superwide cameras have a release lock shown in Figure 9-10. Set to T, the release

stays in even when you remove your ﬁ nger and could be used for time exposures. It is not a
recommended operating procedure because it can create camera shake. For time exposures
with any camera, attach a cable release and pre-release SLR cameras. The lock does not work
