THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL

LENSES FOR DIGITAL RECORDING

Some manufacturers of digital cameras emphasize that lenses for digital recording must have
different quality requirements, must be designed to focus the light more directly to each
pixel, and that lenses designed for ﬁ lm recording do not provide the best or satisfactory qual-
ity, especially on the edges of the image. While there is some truth to these facts, they apply
only to speciﬁ c sensor designs and to extreme wide angle lenses.

New Lens Designs for Digital Imaging

The Carl Zeiss lenses in the V system and the HC lenses in the H system which are designed
to produce the utmost image quality on ﬁ lm are also superb lenses for digital imaging. While
lenses used exclusively in digital imaging still need to be designed to produce superb image
quality, they can have a slightly higher degree of distortion and chromatic aberration because
these lens faults can be further corrected in the computer. This may allow lens designers to
come up with somewhat simpler lens designs and more compact lenses. This new develop-
ment is called Digital Auto Correction (DAC) in the Hasselblad system. No computer or soft-
ware, however, can produce a high quality image from an inferior lens. The computer can only
improve the quality from a good lens. You must start with a lens that was optically designed
