Verification Procedure
When a SC-ES device is enabled for authentication, it is highly recommended that
authentication be tested before exiting the SC-ES configuration session. The following
test verifies whether the server is reachable and responding, and whether the key is
properly configured.
Note
IMPORTANT!
Failure to test the authentication can result in lockout of all users even from the console port.
If possible, observe the console window on the server for any error messages.
1. Ping the server to be sure it can be reached from SC-ES device:
SCES% ping
[IP address]
2. Once the server responds to the ping, test authentication by typing:
configure testing authen
3. Respond to the prompt with your username and password, just like Telnet. After the password
is entered, a pass or fail indication and some diagnostic information will display concerning
message exchange with the server.
4. Test the supervisor/admin password by typing:
configure testing sup-admin
5. Respond to the prompt with your enable password.
Special Considerations
•
In order to change local authentication configuration values or enable and configure
authentication, ADMIN access is required.
•
In the event of an incorrectly configured key, or missing ADMIN or SUPERVISOR entries at
the server, a lockout condition may occur, preventing any access to the SC-ES
device. To restore control, wait for the SC-ES to timeout its attempts to reach a server; this will
force SC-ES to revert to local authentication. Repeat the Configuration procedure
using the corrected values.
•
Up to five servers may be specified:
•
In applications with a single server, if the server does not respond, the
SC-ES will revert to local authentication.
•
In applications with redundant servers, the SC-ES device will look for the
first responding server, starting with the first configured IP, then the second
configure IP, and so on. When a server responds, the default key will be used if the per-
server key is not specified.
•
An authentication timeout will occur when the server is unreachable, when the
service is not responding, or if the server IP address is incorrect. The
default timeout value will be used if the per-server timeout is not specified.
•
When using authentication, the prompts for username/password will be capitalized:
Username, Password.
When using local authentication, the prompts for username/password will not be capitalized:
username, password.
•
The
configure testing
commands work for both local authentication and
authentication.
