Blade Server System Concept
The Blade Server System concept is a modular concept which separates the
I/O functionality (switch blade) from the CPU (server blade). Two management
blades with an integrated management solution for complete redundant remote
administration of the system are also implemented. Fault tolerance on a
complete blade system level is also maintained by using two redundant, hot-
swap power supply units (PSU), as well as hot-swap, redundant fans.
The server blade combines all the core components of a traditional server on a
hot-swap card. It contains one or two CPUs, the main memory and one or two
hard disk drives on which the operating system is installed.
The use of notebook technology and low-voltage Pentium
®
III CPU’s or
Pentium
®
M CPU’s as well as using common power supply units reduce the size
of the hot-swap card to that of an add-on adapter card as used in PCI slots. This
small size allows for high-density with very little power consumption.
The headless design without any connections for keyboard or mouse ports
allows complete remote administration of hardware and software features. VGA
and USB connectors at the front of each server blade can be used for local, on-
site maintenance.
