DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION (Continued)
Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor
The intake air temperature sensor (IAT
sensor)( 1 2A697):
•
changes resistance in response to intake air
temperature.
•
decreases resistance as the surrounding air
temperature increases, providing a signal to the
PCM ( 12A650) indicating temperature of the
incoming intake air.
Idle Air Control (lAC) Valve
INTAKE AIR
TEMPERATURE
(IAT) SENSOR
12A697
V9951-B
The idle air control valve (lAC valve)(9F7 1 5):
•
is used to control engine idle speed (rpm).
•
is mounted on the throttle body (9E926) or the
throttle body adapter (depending upon application).
•
allows air to bypass the throttle plate. The amount
of air allowed to bypass is determined by the
powertrain control module (PCM)( 1 2A650) and
controlled by a duty-cycle signal.
Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
The engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT
sensor)( 1 2A648):
•
changes resistance in response to the engine
coolant temperature.
•
decreases resistance as the surrounding
temperature increases, providing a signal to the
powertrain control module (PCM)( 1 2A650) that
indicates the engine coolant temperature.
Heated Oxygen Sensor (H02S)
The heated oxygen sensors (H02S)(9F4 72) react
with the oxygen in the exhaust gases and generate a
voltage based on this reaction as follows:
•
A low voltage indicates too much oxygen or a lean
condition.
•
A high voltage indicates not enough oxygen or a rich
condition.
The heated oxygen sensors are located in the dual
converter Y pipe (5F250) below the exhaust manifolds
(9430).
Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
3.8L Engine
V10190-A
The camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor)( 1 2 1 26)
is:
•
is a single Hall-effect magnetic switch activated by
a single vane which is driven by the camshaft
(6250).
•
provides camshaft position information which is
used by the powertrain control module
(PCM)( 1 2A650) for fuel synchronization.
4.6L Engine
The camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor)(6B288)
is a variable reluctance sensor which is triggered by
the high-point mark on the camshaft sprocket (6256).
Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
The vehicle speed sensor (VSS)(9E73 1) is a magnetic
pickup that sends a signal to the powertrain control
module (PCM)( 1 2A650). This VSS signal transmits
vehicle speed to the powertrain control module.
