DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING (Continued)

PINPOINT TEST A: LOSS OF COOLANT (Continued)

Test Step

CHECK COOLANT FOR INTERNAL LEAKAGE

•

Inspect coolant in radiator and radiator coolant

recovery reservoir or degas bottle (depending upon

application) for signs of transmission fluid or engine

oil.

•

Is oil evident in coolant?

CHECK ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION FOR COOLANT

•

Remove oil level dipstick from engine and

transmission.

•

Carefully inspect oil level dipstick for evidence of

coolant.

•

Is coolant evident?

PRESSURE TEST COOLING SYSTEM

•

Using a cooling system pressure tester, pressurize

cooling system as described in Component Tests,

Pressure Test.

•

Check for any signs of visible leakage .

NOTE: Check inside vehicle for possible heater

core leakage.

•

Is there leakage?

Result

Yes

ENGINE OVERHEATS

Test Step

CHECK ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL

NOTE: If engine is hot, allow engine to cool down before

proceeding.

•

Remove pressure relief cap or radiator cap and

check engine coolant level at radiator and radiator

coolant recovery reservoir or degas bottle

(depending upon application).

•

Is engine coolant level OK?

CHECK COOLANT CONDITION

•

Check coolant tor contaminants such as rust or

corrosion. Also check tor discoloration and

concentration.

•

Is coolant condition OK?

CHECK FOR AIR FLOW OBSTRUCTION

•

Visually inspect A/C condenser core and radiator

for obstructions such as leaves or bugs.

•

Is there any obstruction?

CHECK HEATER CORE OPERATION

•

Install pressure relief cap or radiator cap .

•

Start engine and allow to run .

•

As engine starts to warm up, feel the heater inlet

and outlet hoses. They should feel the same after

three or tour minutes.

•

Is heater outlet hose the same temperature as

the inlet hose?

CHECK WATER THERMOSTAT OPERATION

•

Allow engine to run tor 10 minutes .

•

Feel the underside of the upper radiator hose .

•

Is the upper radiator hose cold?
