DIAGNOSING FAULTS
Using the Examinator™ diagnostic tool, you can read
fault codes stored in memory and display other engine
performance information. The Examinator diagnostic
tool plugs into the ECM through the diagnostic connec-
tor located under the seat. Refer to the Examinator
Handbook for information about using the Examinator
diagnostic tool. The diagnostic hardware and software
conforms to the Onboard Diagnostics II (OBD II) stan-
dard.
The following pages provide troubleshooting procedures
for diagnosing and correcting fuel injection system
faults. Each fault code procedure begins with a circuit
diagram followed by a sequence of tasks and tests. The
following wire color codes are used:
Connectors are identified with the letter P and a num-
ber: P1, P2 and so on. A male connector has pins and is
identified with the letter “A”. For example, the male throt-
tle position sensor connector is P7A. A female connec-
tor has sockets and is identified by the letter “B”. For
example, the female throttle position sensor is P7B.
Pins are identified by number or letter as labeled on the
connector. For example, power to the throttle position
sensor is applied to pin P7A-A.
The Examinator diagnostic tool displays a variety of
engine data that can help you determine the cause for a
fault. This data is found in the Examinator Current Data,
Fault History Data, and Read Sensor displays. The fol-
lowing terms are used:
Calculated Load
Ratio of the actual air mass per stroke to the calculated
maximum expressed as a percentage. This value indi-
cates engine efficiency.
Long Term Fuel Trim
Difference between the initial programmed air/fuel ratio
value and the actual average air/fuel ratio. This value is
expressed in units of area and is proportional to the
amount of air needed to balance the increase or
decease in fuel.
Short Term Fuel Trim
Total increase or decrease in injector pulse time from
the initial programmed value expressed as a percent-
age.
Idle Reference Speed
Target engine speed at idle expressed in kRPM based
on current conditions.
Purge Valve Duty Cycle
Ratio of purge valve open time to total cycle time
expressed as a percentage.
Idle Air Control Valve Adaption
A correction applied to the idle air control setting to
account for changes in air leakage.
