ARMATURE

Inspect the shaft for worn or damaged drive gear teeth.

Inspect armature bearings. The bearings should rotate

smoothly and quietly with no axial movement.

Test for continuity between the armature core and any

commutator segment.

Standard:

No continuity

Test for continuity between each pair of adjacent

commutator segments.

Standard:

Continuity

FIELD WINDING

Measure the length of each brush. If the length is less

than the service limit for any brush, replace the brush holder
and field winding brushes.

Service Limit: 0.236 inches

Test for continuity between the brush holder base and

each of the two field winding brush housings. If the test fails,
replace the brush holder.

Standard:

No continuity

HOUSING

ASSEMBLY

Install the field winding and brush holder into the starter

motor case.

Install the starter motor terminal and washers.

Install the front cover O-ring.

Raise each brush spring slightly on its post and set the

spring so that it presses on the upper edge of the brush
housing.

Place each brush in its housing.

Install the front cover O-ring, front cover, and armature.

Reset each brush spring down on its post and brush.

Install the rear cover O-ring, shim, and rear cover. Align

the markings on the case with those on the front and rear
covers.

Fasten the thru-bolts.

Torque: 5 ft-lbs
