15. Place the cam chain on the idler gear and place them in 
the cam chain tunnel of front cylinder. 

16. Rotate the idler gear until F| mark on the left side of the 
idler gear is at 12 o’clock.

17. Install the lower cam idler gear for the front cylinder with 
the timing marks aligned as shown.

18. Lubricate the idler gear bearing and spindle with a 
molybdenum oil solution.

19. Lift idler gear and adjust its position in the cam chain as 
necessary to align the F| mark with the index mark on the 
cylinder head as shown. 

20. Install the idler gear spindle with a new sealing washer.

Torque: 30 ft-lbs

21. Rotate the top of the idler gear forward to remove any 
slack in the cam chain and check the alignment of the timing/
index marks. Adjust idler gear in the cam chain if necessary.

22. Reset the cam chain tensioner by releasing the ratchet 
and pressing the rod back into the housing.

23. Install the cam chain tensioner housing in the front 
cylinder with a new gasket.

Torque: 8 ft-lbs

24. Install the cam chain tensioner spring and cap with a new 
sealing washer.

Torque: 19 ft-lbs

25. Lubricate the lifters with engine oil. 

Notice

Hydraulic lifters pump up slightly when removed from the 
head. This may keep the camshafts from setting in the 
bottom of the journal holders when assembled. The lifters 
bleed down as soon as the engine is turned over a few 
times.
