6. Inspect the cylinder for cracks. If cracks are found in the
cylinder, replace the cylinder.
7. Clean the cylinders in non-volatile cleaning solvent. Make
sure that all traces of filings or dye have been removed.
8. Wash the cylinder bore with dish washing soap and warm
water to remove any abrasive particles or debris.
9. Dry the cylinders and wipe clean. Apply a light coating of
engine oil to the cylinder bore with a clean lint free shop rag.
MEASUREMENT
CYLINDER BORE
Measure and record the cylinder bore size in the ring path.
The ring path is the area in the cylinder bore between the
highest and lowest point of piston and ring travel. If the
cylinder taper or out-of-round exceeds the service limit, bore
and/or hone the cylinder to the next larger standard piston
size. This also requires refitting the cylinder with the next
standard size piston and piston rings.
1. Measure from front to rear and from side to side in the
cylinder bores at the following bore depths:
– Top of the ring path area about 1/2 inch into the cylinder
bore.
– Middle of the bore
– Below the ring path at the bottom of the bore.
Notice
To accurately assess the cylinder condition,
measurements must be made at these locations.
Maximum wear occurs at the top of the ring path;
minimum wear occurs below the ring path.

2. Calculate cylinder taper by subtracting the smallest of the
six measurements from the largest measurement.

measurement from the side-to-side measurement at each
bore depth.
