PISTON RINGS
1. Apply clean engine oil to the three piston ring grooves.
2. Install the compression rings into the first and second
ring grooves. Install the compression ring in the second
groove with the dot toward the top. Install the oil control
expander ring into the third ring groove.
3. Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance between
the upper surface of the ring and the bottom of the ring land
for each ring. If the clearance is greater than the service limit,
replace the piston ring.

4. Use a piston to press each piston ring squarely into the
cylinder bore. Remove the piston and measure the end gap
for each ring. If the gap is greater than the service limit,
replace the ring.
– Compression ring
Service Limit: 0.010 in
– Oil ring
Service Limit: 0.011 in
Caution
• Insufficient ring end gap can cause the rings to butt
against each other under operating temperatures. This
can cause ring damage or breakage resulting in
cylinder scuffing and piston/ring seizure.
• Excessive ring gap can cause high oil consumption
and blow-by of engine exhaust gases. This
contaminates the engine oil and creates sludge in the
crankcase reducing the combustion seal required for
the efficient transfer of energy to the piston in the
combustion chamber.
