BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM
Air trapped in the brake system adversely effects brake
system performance. Air can enter the brake system during
system service or from hydraulic fluid contamination.
Bleeding the brake system removes air from the system.
The following procedure can also be used to flush or replace
hydraulic fluid at the prescribed maintenance intervals
(see
Chapter 1. ROUTINE MAINTENANCE)
.
Notice
Since each brake system (front or rear) is separate, it is
only necessary to bleed the system being serviced.
1.
Support the motorcycle so the reservoir is horizontal.
2.
Clean the area around the reservoir cap and remove the
reservoir cap, plate, and diaphragm.
3.
Fill the reservoir to within 1/4" of the top with new DOT 5
hydraulic fluid from a clean container.
4.
Reinstall the diaphragm, plate, and reservoir cap.

3. DIAPHRAGM
5.
Remove the caliper bleed valve cover and push one end
of a piece of 3/16" I.D. clear tubing over the bleed valve.
Place the other end of the tube in a container filled with
enough hydraulic fluid to cover the end of the tube.
6.
Pump the brake pedal or lever a few times to build
pressure in brake system, then firmly depress and hold the
brake pedal or lever.
7.
Open the bleed valve about 1/2 turn and allow fluid to
flow from the caliper. When fluid stops flowing, close the
bleed valve and release the brake pedal or lever.
8.
Repeat steps 6 & 7 until the fluid exiting the caliper is
clean and free of any trapped air bubbles.
Notice
Check and refill the fluid reservoir frequently. Adding fluid
to the reservoir during the bleeding process prevents air
from entering the brake system.
9.
Tighten the bleed valve and reinstall the cover.
10. Fill the reservoir to within 1/4" of the top with new DOT 5
hydraulic fluid from a clean container.
11. Check the operation of the brakes before riding the
motorcycle, and again at low speed before returning the
motorcycle to normal use. The brake pedal or lever should
have firm even resistance with no spongy feel.
