6
Correct assembly of the spacer. It allows to adapt the
handle to smaller hands.
7
Strength of the shaft eyes
8
Some extreme uses applied to ice tools and crampons
(some of these in dry-tooling) result in great strain to
the material. Lever-action or torsion applied to pick or
shaft may lead to rapid wear or failure of the equip-
ment during use.
9
Correct and incorrect anchor points for planned static
loading, e.g.; for resting of the climber.
10
Correct use of the finger rest
11
The surface point of gravity is marked on some ice
tools. For optimum use, the sling of a T-anchor
should be fastened at this point.
12
The hand‘s position on the shaft has great influence
on the loading strength and stability of the ice tool in
the ice.
13
Use the ice tools to drive piton only when the hammer
is attached. Otherwise the ice tool may be damaged.
14
Blunt picks of ice tools can be reground by the user
using a file. Machine grinding of any type, however,
will weaken the material due to the heat-up of the
material, and is therefore not admissible. If the tip of
the pick is worn (up to the last tooth) by more than
50 % of the original size, the pick and its assembly
components must be replaced.
15
Storage and transport
16
Maintenance
Wet ice tools should be taken from their containers upon
completion of a tour. Commercial disinfectants based on
alcohol (isopropanol) may be used if necessary. The
joints of metal parts must be cleansed regularly and then
be lubricated with acid-free oil or a lubricant based on
Teflon or silicone.
Service life and replacement
The service life of the product mainly depends on the
type and frequency of use as well as on external influenc-
es. When approaching the durability limits or at the end
of the maximum service life indicated, the product must
be removed from use.
17
Maximum service life in years
18
Maximum useful life providing proper use and no
detectable signs of wear showing as well as under
optimum storage conditions
Therefore, before use, check the product for possible
damages and correct function. If in doubt concerning
the safety condition of the product, remove it from use
immediately. Remove the ice product from service im-
mediately if any of the following applies
- fall and impact from great height have occurred,
- extreme grooving and/or deformation is visible,
- the device is damaged or malfunctions.
- fissures in or brittleness of plastic parts
- replace any strongly worn adze (see Fig. 14)
Repairs may only be performed as outlined in the in-
structions of the manufacturer.
Temperature during use: see Fig. 20.
19
Inspection and documentation
In case of commercial use, the product must be inspect-
ed regularly, at least once a year, by the manufacturer, an
adequately qualified person or an approved inspection
body/agency; thereafter it may have to be serviced or
removed from use. Legibility of the markings has to be
checked. Such inspections and service must be docu-
mented for each product. The following information must
be recorded: product identification and name, manufac-
turer’s name and contact details, unique identification,
date of manufacture, date of purchase, date of initial use,
date of next regular inspection, result of inspection, and
signature of qualified person responsible. A suitable
specimen is found online at www.edelrid.com
