Hazardous energy may remain in the batteries even after the main AC disconnect is open.
2. If the cabinet has suffered a fire, perform the Fire Procedure in lieu of this procedure.
3. Any personnel approaching the cabinet should don full PPE and self-contained breathing apparatus.

1. Contact the local fire department.
2. Contact the system owner and service organization to obtain information on the alarm condition from the
system controller and the battery management system.
a. Alarm condition information will include the time that abnormal hydrogen levels were first detected.
b. Battery management system information will include the presence of abnormally hot cells, which may
indicate the location of the failed battery cell.
3. Evacuate the immediate area of all nonessential personnel.
4. Secure utility power to the cabinet by opening the main AC disconnect.
5. Using a portable gas meter, periodically sample the air surrounding the cabinet for the presence of
flammable gases.
6. Ventilate the cabinet by directing the discharge of a fan at the lower ventilation louver.
7. Once the local flammable gas concentration has been reduced to a safe level, open the doors of the
cabinet.
8. If a battery cell or module has experienced thermal runaway and rupture, cool the battery as needed by:
a. Continued ventilation with external fans.
b. Water spray.
9. The system is safe to turn over to the owner for repair or disposal once the temperature of the deranged
battery does not increase above ambient when cooling is paused.
