Chapter 10

Internal 4-20mA Option

Doran’s

GuardianXL

can be supplied with a 4-20mA Analog Output Option. The 4-

20mA Analog Output Option is used to provide a continuous analog output that is
proportional to the weight on the scale platform. Because of the inherent noise immunity
present in a current loop, an isolated 4-20mA analog output is ideal for use in noisy
environments. The 4-20mA analog output option can be used to send weight data to a
process indicator, a simple on/off controller or to a programmable logic controller.

4-20mA Installation

If the indicator was shipped from DORAN with this option installed skip ahead to the 4-
20mA Setup section below. If you have an existing

GuardianXL

indicator and now

require the 4-20mA option, this section will describe the installation of the 4-20mA
option.

To install the 4-20mA option, remove power from the scale indicator and remove the
back panel. The 4-20mA board will be installed in the lower left quadrant of the
motherboard as you see in figure 10.1 below. The 4-20mA board comes with three
plastic standoffs installed. These standoffs will mate with the motherboard for a snug fit.
The bottom of the 4-20mA board has a female header that mates with the J1 six pin male
header on the motherboard. To install the board, ensure the connectors are mating
properly and snap the board into place. The installation of the 4-20mA board will block
the RS-232 and I/O connectors on the motherboard.
