Running faults
Alarms are often blamed for running faults on the machine but it is very rare for them to really be the cause.
Please remember the S4 Green alarm upgrade does not have immobilisation and so will not create running faults.
In most cases the fault will be with some other factor:
The machine itself
The installation
Other work carried out on the machine (often by the owner)
Weather conditions (e.g. carb icing, HT lead shorts, etc)
The rider themselves
Most of these running faults can be eliminated from the alarm simply by substituting the alarm for the test box and taking
the machine for a ride. If the fault is still there, it is machine based (or possibly a bad installation).
However if the fault does disappear do not assume it MUST be the alarm. It could still be a machine or installation based
fault.
The ignition sensing wire of the alarm also controls the immobilisation relays within the system if the feed from this wire is
poor (or it switches off if certain controls are operated) it will cause the machine to cut out. This is why a run critical
ignition switched supply should be used wherever possible.
Most running faults occur as the machine becomes older and are due to wear and tear. Always check items such as side
stand switches, kill switches, fall over sensors, plugs, HT leads, harness/connector condition, etc, as part of your fault
finding tests.
It may also be the wire chosen to immobilise the machine is very sensitive to resistance. In such cases it will be evident
almost immediately the machine is ridden. The cure is to change the point of immobilisation.
If you are convinced the cause is the alarm you can try substituting the head unit but we would recommend you to try the
test box before this and contact Datatool (or your local distributor or manufacturer) if you bought the system through them.
Datatool can advise of further tests which may help you to discover the real cause.
Important: Never fit an alarm to a machine you have not heard running and checked for faults.
