Camera Performance and
Features
This section is intended to be an introduction to the features of the camera, including explanations
of how to use them effectively.
Acquiring Images: Triggering the Camera
Linea2 5GigE line exposures are initiated by a trigger event. The Linea2 can acquire images using
its own internal trigger (free-running mode) or using an external trigger (EXSYNC) with several
options for the trigger source. A trigger is either the camera's programmable internal clock used in
free-running mode, an external input used for synchronizing exposures to external triggers, or a
programmed function call message by the controlling computer. These triggering modes are
described below.
• Free-running — Line or Frame (TriggerMode = Off ): The Linea2 5GigE free-running mode
has programmable internal timers for line rate / exposure period and frame rates. Line rate and
frame rates are independent. Frame free-running simply means acquire all lines.
• External trigger (TriggerMode = On ): Exposures are controlled by an external or internal
trigger signal where the specific input line or source is selected by the Trigger Source feature.
External signal inputs have a time programmable debounce circuit.
• Virtual frames : For any exposure type, the virtual frame (that is, the number of exposure
lines per frame) is set by the Height feature, available in the Image Format Control category.
The Trigger Mode feature determines if the cameras uses free-running mode (TriggerMode = Off )
or an external trigger (TriggerMode = On ).
In free-running mode, the Acquisition Line Rate feature specifies the line rate, in Hz. The maximum
line rate is determined by the Exposure Time feature. The Internal Acquisition Frames Per Second
(FPS) feature returns the FPS for the specified Acquisition Line Rate.
• If the Acquisition Line Rate is reduced and/or frame buffer Height is increased, the value of the
Image Timeout feature (part of the GigE Vision Host Control category) may require increasing
(see Buffer Incomplete Error Message).
• If error messages are shown in the Output Messages pane, try increasing the value of the
Linea2 5GigE Interpacket Delay feature available from the GigE Vision Transport Layer
Category. An increase from default may correct errors with NIC interfaces that do not have
