9.4 - Delivery and return
WARNING! COSMOGAS is not accountable
for any possible damage caused by incorrect use of
system additives.
Before connecting the plumbing, wash out the system
carefully to get rid of any residues that could damage the
appliance. This washing must also be carried out when a
appliance is replaced.
In figures 8-1 and 8-2 you can check the positioning of the
delivery and return connections.
Do not use the appliance to introduce any type of
additive to the system.
9.5 - Water supply
WARNING! The connection of the system (and
therefore the appliance) to the water mains must be
carried out by interposing a device that prevents
backflows to the water supply, as required by the anti-
pollution safety regulations in force.
9.5.1 - Chemical balancing
This appliance has been designed specifically for your
jacuzzi or swimming pool and will give you many years of
problem-free service, so long as the water chemistry is kept
in good conditions.
There are three main elements that can cause problems
to the appliance: wrong pH, residual disinfectant and
excessive alkalinity. These elements, if not kept correctly
balanced, can reduce the lifetime of the appliance and
cause permanent damage (see table in section 9.5.3).
WARNING! Damage to appliance caused by
incorrect chemical balancing of the water is not
covered by the warranty.
9.5.2 - Disinfectant
To prevent the proliferation of algae and bacteria while
maintaining the taste, odour and clearness of the water
at desired levels, the water must be disinfected. Normally
chlorine and bromine are used. These are products which, if
used in the right quantities, cause no damage to the appliance.
After adding chlorine or bromine to the swimming pool water,
part of the disinfectant will be used up in the process of
destroying bacteria, algae and other oxidisable materials. The
remaining disinfectant is called residual chlorine or bromine
residue. The level of residual disinfectant in the swimming pool
water can be determined with test kits available at a swimming
pool supplies shop. It is necessary to maintain a residual
disinfectant level that is sufficient to ensure the continuous
elimination of bacteria or viruses brought into the pool by
swimmers or through the air, from dust, rain or other sources.
It is advisable to test the pool water regularly. Never let the
chlorine residue fall below 0.6 mg/l. The minimum level for
effective residual chlorine or bromine is 1 mg/l.
Go to a specialist swimming pool materials shop to purchase a
pH detection kit. The term pH refers to the acid/base balance
of the water expressed on a numerical scale from 0 to 14 (see
table in section 9.5.3).
keep a pH from 7.2 to 7.6. It is essential to keep the correct
pH (see table in section 9.5.3);
If the pH becomes too high (basic), it has these effects:
1. The capacity of chlorine to destroy bacteria and algae is
noticeably reduced.
2. The water becomes cloudy.
3. There is greater danger of limescale forming on the heat
exchanger pipes.
4. The filtration elements might be blocked.
If the pH is too low (acidic), the following conditions may occur:
1. Burning eyes and skin irritation.
2. Deterioration of the plaster around the swimming pool.
3. Corrosion of metal parts in the filtration and recirculation
system, which can create brown, blue, green or sometimes
black marks on the plaster around the swimming pool.
4. If you have a filter for sand and gravel, the alum used as a
filter aid can dissolve and pass through the filter.
WARNING! Do not test the pH when the chlorine
residue is more than 3.0 mg/l or the bromine residue
is more than 6.0 mg/l. Consult your swimming pool
supplies shop for help with correctly balancing your
water chemistry.
