Chapter 3
Rack-Mount Server Installation
This chapter covers the following information:
■
How to attach the mounting hardware to the server and to the rack
■
How to install the server into the rack
You may choose Compaq’s optional installation service to install your rack
products. See “Optional Installation Service” at the end of this chapter.
Rack Warnings and Precautions
Before beginning these procedures, make sure you understand the following
warnings and cautions.
WARNING:
To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to
the equipment, at least two people are needed to safely unload
the rack from the pallet. An empty 42U rack weighs 253 lb (115
kg), is over seven ft (2.1 m) tall, and may become unstable when
being moved on its casters. Do not stand in front of the rack as it
rolls down the ramp from the pallet, but handle it from the sides.
WARNING:
Because the rack allows you to stack computer
servers on a vertical rather than a horizontal plane, you must take
precautions to provide for rack stability and safety. It is important
that you follow these basic instructions to protect both personnel
and property, and that you heed all cautions and warnings
throughout the installation instructions.
WARNING:
Always load the heaviest item first and always load
the rack from the bottom up. This will make the rack "bottom-
heavy" and help prevent the rack from becoming unstable. See
"Rules for the Rack Builder" on the “Compaq Installing Rack
Products CD” for the rules that govern the vertical placement of
rack-mounted servers.
