service screen in order to run the hand-feed
conveyor properly.
Sequence of Operations
– Trimmer
1. Books enter into the trimmer on the internal
in-feed conveyor. As a book is moved
across the gripper, the book in position sen-
sor mounted on the gripper assembly de-
tects when the book is in position. Once the
book is in the proper position, the conveyors
stop, and the gripper clamps the book.
2. The gripper transports the book to the regis-
tration station. As it is transported, air is
blasted underneath the book to reduce fric-
tion and scratching to the cover. The regis-
tration plates are accurately positioned with
a leadscrew controlled by a DC motor with
encoder feedback. The stop plate that the
book is jogged against is retracted as the
book moves in and out of the station. It re-
mains extended, as the book is being jogged
and squared. An air cylinder on the left side
of the table pushes the book into the regis-
tration stop plate. The gripper moves for-
ward slowly to bring the binding flush with
the fence on the gripper and parallel to the
face knife. The gripper then clamps the
book and accelerates to the trimming sta-
tion.
3. Once in the trimming area, the book rotates
90° ccw in order to prepare for the bottom
trim. In order for the gripper to rotate, a
locking air cylinder releases, then a DC
stepper motor rotates the gripper to approxi-
mately the proper rotational position, then
the locking air cylinder locks the gripper as-
sembly in the exact rotational position.
4. Once rotated, the gripper moves the book to
the proper cutting position.
5. The knife and clamp assembly is driven by a
hydraulic cylinder mounted to a cast iron
frame underneath the table. The clamp
leads the knife and is powered by com-
pressed air captured in a set of air cylinders
mounted to the clamp. The air pressure to
the clamp cylinders is adjustable at the rear
of the machine.
6. The dump valve closes preventing oil from
flowing back to tank. The cut valve opens
allowing oil to flow to the down port on the
hydraulic cylinder. A counterbalance valve
on the cylinder prevents the knife assembly
from moving until there is 900 PSI. This re-
duces vibration. The knife assembly begins
moving at 900 PSI. The pressure increases
under load of cutting and clamping. The
system relief pressure is set from 1800-2000
PSI. Oil is sent back to tank at this pressure
setting.
7. The knife depth adjustment plunger actuates
the knife slowdown sensor at 1/2 inch above
the table. When the sensor switches on, the
computer adjusts a proportional valve in the
hydraulic manifold to slow the knife assem-
bly in order to reduce shock when the knife
hits the cut stick.
8. The direction of oil flow is reversed when the
knife down sensor no longer senses the ad-
justment plunger. This causes the knife as-
sembly to be sent up. A sensor detects that
the knife assembly is in the up position, at
which point the dump valve opens.
9. The gripper assembly rotates the book 180°
cw, in the same way as described earlier.
10. The top trim is performed by the knife and
clamp in the same way as described earlier.
11. The gripper assembly rotates the book 90°
ccw, in the same way as described earlier.
12. The face trim is performed by the knife and
clamp in the same way as described earlier.
13. The gripper transport then takes the book
back to home position.
14. At the home position, the book is released
and the conveyors start moving. The book
exits the machine onto the installed out-feed
device.
Additional Information
The trimmer provides a serial interface
with which book size change commands
can be received from another computer.
The trimmer also provides a shutdown
relay that can be used to signal other in-
line equipment that it is running or
paused.
Sequence of Operations
– Out-feed
Option 1: Vertical Book Stacker
1. As the book exits the trimmer, the rollers in
the upper tray move the book completely
into the upper tray. A sensor in the upper
tray detects when the book is completely
loaded. A second sensor detects if the book
is thicker that approximately 1” (2.5cm).
2. An air cylinder lifts the lower end of the up-
per tray until it is level.
3. Another air cylinder lifts the side of the upper
tray, allowing the book to be ejected off from
the upper tray and down onto the Vertical
Stacker delivery bed. If the book is more
than 1” (2.5cm) thick, a pusher assembly
powered by an air cylinder retracts slightly to
allow more room for thicker books.
4. A sensor detects when the book lands onto
the delivery bed.
5. Then a fingered gate powered by a rod-less
air cylinder drops down, and the pusher as-
sembly moves the book to the other side of
