Chapter 7

FDDI

This chapter examines the Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) network technology in detail and
provides step-by-step design instructions for the creation of FDDI networks using Cabletron Systems
networking products.

Description

Fiber Distributed Data Interface, or FDDI, is a token-based networking
technology that provides high-speed intercommunications between stations on
the ring. When compared to the other common networking technologies, FDDI is
a fast, powerful, elegant, and fault-tolerant network design. FDDI is a great leap
forward from its logical parent, the Token Ring technology, and an even greater
leap from the contention-based Ethernet network technology.

FDDI provides 100 Mbps worth of transmission speed, and a token-passing based
transmission method, eliminating random delays due to heavy use. This means
an FDDI ring moves packets from one station to another at 100 Mbps, guaranteed.
Despite the fact that all stations on the FDDI ring share the available bandwidth,
the token passing scheme ensures that every station will have a predictable
opportunity to transmit data.

While many of the shortcomings of Ethernet were addressed in the creation of
Token Ring, many of the remaining difficulties of Ethernet, and many issues not
addressed by Token Ring, are dealt with in FDDI. The FDDI technology provides
greater speed than either Ethernet or Token Ring, greater fault tolerance and
recovery than either, and a more straightforward design system. Unlike Ethernet
and Token Ring, which are both IEEE standards, the FDDI standard is maintained
by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), ANSI Standard X3T9.5.
