Multichannel Token Ring Configuration

Token Ring
The Multichannel Token Ring design allows the use of Ring-In/Ring-Out
(RI/RO) modules that supply RI/RO connections to two separate Token Ring
trunks and allows each set of RI/RO ports to be assigned to one of the four Token
Ring backplane channels of the MMAC chassis. The Ring-In/Ring-Out modules
which provide this functionality are called Token Ring Dual Repeater Modules, or
TDRMIMs.
All TDRMIMs provide two sets of RI/RO ports. The RI/RO ports of the TDRMIM
are multimode fiber optic ST connectors. This example design requires two
RI/RO connections to the other two hubs in the main facility. We need to add one
TDRMIM module to the chassis in order to meet the requirements. In order to
keep the operation of the remote Token Ring hubs from impacting the operation
of the Token Rings based in this chassis, one RI/RO connection is assigned to
Ring 3 of the MMAC chassis, while the second is assigned to Ring 4.
As there are TDRMIM modules available which have lobe ports on the front panel
that may be assigned to any backplane channel, we are able to cut back on the
number of TRXMIM modules we specified in order to complete our lobe
connection needs. Because the TDRMIM-22A provides 12 UTP RJ45 ports in
addition to the RI/RO ports on the front panel, we eliminate the one
TRXMIM-22A from the design and use the 12 ports of the TDRMIM-22A to meet
the lobe connectivity requirements. The available port count remains the same,
but the number of modules and the total cost of the configuration are reduced.
Now that all of the required connections to stations and to other rings are in place,
we need to supply a means of interconnection. As the network configuration
stands, there is no means for data frames on any of the backplane rings to be
passed to another of the rings if necessary. To accomplish this, we need to add a
segmentation device to the network to perform bridging or routing services. To
handle four complete Token Ring networks in the one chassis, we choose the
CRM-3T. The CRM-3T connects to the Ring 1 channel of the FNB backplane and
supports multiple front panel routed connections through the use of Network
Process Modules (NPMs). A complete list of currently available NPMs may be
found in the Cabletron Systems Networking Solutions Catalog or received from your
