Chapter 6
Token Ring
This chapter examines the Token Ring network technology in detail and provides step-by-step design
instructions for the creation of Token Ring networks using Cabletron Systems networking products.
Description
Token Ring is a token-based networking technology that provides a reliable,
stable amount of network throughput to all stations under all load conditions.
The reason for this is the non-contention based access method of this technology,
the feature that puts the token in Token Ring.
The topology of the network is a logical ring. Instead of Ethernet, where signals
go to all stations at once, regardless of their location, Token Ring networks require
that the data travels a specific path, from the transmitter of one station to the
receiver of the next station in the logical ring (see Figure 6-1). This organization
provides Token Ring with its error detection and fault isolation and recovery
features. These special features are discussed later in this section.
