Token Ring

The Token Ring must operate over the selected cabling and must operate at
16 Mbps. The chassis from which this network operates is a Cabletron Systems
MMAC-M8FNB modular networking chassis. To function, the chassis must be
outfitted with the correct modular power supplies. This provides the basic
concentrator capability into which the connectivity and functionality modules are
added.

Both Token Ring networks will require that a management module be supplied to
the chassis. The management module will control and monitor the operation of
the first Token Ring segment. This module provides for fault notification,
isolation, and recovery, and will initialize and control the ring. Without a Token
Ring management module in the modular chassis the Token Ring network does
not function.

Cabletron Systems produces a number of Token Ring management modules
which provide for the creation of Token Ring networks. It is important to select a
Token Ring management module which fulfills the requirements of the network.
For the purposes of creating a Token Ring in a modular chassis, Cabletron
Systems produces two management modules, the TRMM and TRMMIM. While
other Token Ring management modules also create single token rings, these other
modules are primarily intended to create multiple Token Rings within the chassis
and are notably more expensive than the TRMM and TRMMIM.

The TRMM and TRMMIM differ primarily in the location in the chassis that they
are designed to operate in. A TRMM is a half-size module intended to be used in
the management module slot of the modular chassis. The TRMMIM can be placed
in any full-sized slot in the modular chassis. The TRMMIM can therefore be used
in a modular chassis which already contain Ethernet networks or existing Token
Rings managed by a TRMM module.
