Description
These FDDI Management Modules are called FDMMIMs, and they are available
in a number of configurations. The basic FDMMIM supplies the management
functionality for other FDDI modules in the chassis, and provides one set of A/B
ports on the front panel for connection to an FDDI dual counterrotating ring. In
order to better utilize the available space in an MMAC chassis, FDMMIMs are
also available with four M ports on the front panel for station connections. These
station connections, which are available for the TP-PMD or MMF-PMD media,
can be used for single ring connections to a small number of FDDI stations.
The FDMMIM module also controls FDCMIMs, FDDI Concentrator Media
Interface Modules. FDCMIMs attach to the backplane bus of the FNB which is
used for FDDI module connections. They act as Single Attached Concentrators
(SACs), and each provides four or eight M ports on the front panel which may be
used for additional station connections.
The FDMMIM, as mentioned above, is a management module for FDDI networks
in addition to its functions as an Ethernet to FDDI bridge. One FDMMIM in an
MMAC chassis may control up to six FDCMIM concentrator modules, providing
ring management and control features to the Network Manager.
FDCMIMs are available in any of the ANSI standard media and connector
configurations: multimode fiber optics, single mode fiber optics, Shielded Twisted
pair and Unshielded Twisted Pair. FDCMIMs all have an associated numerical
suffix which indicates the type and number of connectors available on the front
panel of the module. The first digit of the suffix indicates the media type: 0 for
multimode fiber optics, 2 for UTP cabling, 3 for single mode fiber optics, and 4 for
STP cabling. The second digit indicates the number of ports available, four
(indicated by the number 4) or eight (indicated by the number 8). Thus, an
FDCMIM-24 is an FDDI concentrator with four front panel UTP ports.
