The Token Ring modules which manage and configure the multiple channels of
the backplane are the
TRMM-4
and
TRMM-2
. These modules are Token Ring
management modules, and are discussed further in the later portions of this
chapter. The TRMM-4 provides management functions for the four backplane
Token Ring channels of the MMAC chassis, channels which can be accessed by
Token Ring Port Assignment modules (TRXMIMs and TDRMIMs). These
modules do not perform bridging.
The Token Ring bridge connects two separate segments of the chassis backplane
together. The
TRBMIM
is a full-slot module designed to be placed in the middle
of a chassis. The TRBMIM closes off the Token Ring backplane to its left and right,
making one ring into two. The TRBMIM then bridges between one of the two
rings and a front panel lobe connection. Its bridging functions provide a
connection between the initial backplane bus of the chassis and one other Token
Ring which is created by the closing of the Token Ring backplane by the TRBMIM
and its re-initialization on the other side (see Figure 6-14, above).
The TRBMIM may also be used to bridge to an external Token Ring network
(perhaps operating in another chassis) through its front panel station port.
The second type of Token Ring bridge is that which connects the Token Ring
technology to another networking technology. Cabletron Systems produces a
module which does this, the
ETWMIM
. ETWMIM is an acronym for
Ethernet/Token Ring/Wide Area Media Interface Module. As the name implies,
the ETWMIM can bridge between any two of those three technologies, connecting
to Ethernet networks either through the chassis backplane or a front panel EPIM
port, connecting to the Token Ring network through a backplane connection, and
connecting to a Wide Area nNetwork through the optional integrated T1 interface
and built-in CSU/DSU (Channel Service Unit/Data Service Unit) of the
ETWMIM.
