Starting the engine
Never run the engine in enclosed spaces,
as inhaling the harmful exhaust gas can
lead to loss of consciousness with fatal conse-
quences. The exhaust gas contains carbon
monoxide, which is colourless and odourless,
but highly toxic. Do not leave the car unat-
tended with the engine running, as this consti-
tutes a hazard.
Before leaving the car with the engine running,
place the transmission in idle or move the
selector lever to position P and apply the hand-
brake to prevent the car from moving.
<
Do not press the accelerator pedal while start-
ing the engine.
Do not warm up the engine with the car at a
standstill; it is preferable to set off straight away,
driving at moderate engine speeds.
Do not press either the brake pedal or the
clutch pedal until you are ready to start
the engine. The engine is started immediately
when you briefly touch the start/stop button
and depress the brake pedal if the car has auto-
matic transmission, or the clutch pedal if the car
has manual transmission.
<
Manual gearbox
1.
Apply the handbrake.
2.
Press the clutch pedal.
3.
Briefly press the start/stop button.
The starter is operated automatically for a cer-
tain time, and operation ceases automatically as
soon as the engine has started.
Automatic transmission
1.
Press the brake pedal.
2.
Move the selector lever to position P or, if
the ignition is switched on, to position N.
3.
Briefly press the start/stop button.
The starter is operated automatically for a cer-
tain time, and operation ceases automatically as
soon as the engine has started.
Exceptional starting conditions
In the following situations, press the accelerator
pedal halfway down when starting the engine.
>
If the engine does not start at the first
attempt, for instance when it is extremely
hot or cold.
>
If the engine is started at very low ambient
temperatures of below approx. –15
6
(5
7
) or at high altitudes of more than about
1000 m (approx. 3300 ft) above sea level.
Avoid starting, stopping and restarting
the engine in rapid succession as well as
repeated attempts to start the engine if it does
not fire, otherwise unburned or only partially
combusted fuel could reach the catalytic con-
verter, which could overheat and be damaged
as a result.
<
Cars with diesel engine
When the engine is cold and the temperature is
below approx. 0
6
(32
7
), starting may be
delayed by automatic preheating. In the instru-
ment cluster, the preheat indicator light comes
on.
Stopping the engine
Do not take the remote control out of the
ignition lock while the vehicle is in motion,
as otherwise the steering wheel lock will
engage upon any steering movement.
Always take the remote control with you when
you leave the vehicle.
When parking on an incline, apply the hand-
brake, otherwise the vehicle could roll away.
