To help prevent damage:
1. Keep your engine properly maintained. Engine malfunctions involving the electrical, electronic fuel
injection or ignition systems may result in unusually high catalytic converter and exhaust system
temperatures which, under extreme malfunctioning conditions, may ignite interior floorcovering
materials above the exhaust system. Do not keep driving your vehicle if you detect engine misfire,
noticeable loss of performance, or other unusual operating conditions. Instead, have it serviced
promptly. See the Maintenance Schedule and Log for information on inspecting and maintaining the
engine, exhaust system and other components.
2. Do not push or tow this vehicle to start it. This may result in unusually high catalytic converter and
exhaust system temperatures which under extreme conditions may ignite interior floorcovering ma-
terials above the converter or exhaust system.
Disregarding these instructions could damage the catalytic converter, exhaust system, the vehicle or nearby
property and affect warranty coverage.
THE COMPUTER COMMAND CONTROL SYSTEM
All TBI (Throttle Body Injection) equipped vehicles have the Computer Command Control system.
The Computer Command Control system monitors the exhaust stream with an oxygen sensor. Based on
sensor signals, the electronic control module adjusts the air/fuel ratio as needed. It is very important to use
only unleaded fuel in vehicles equipped with the Computer Command Control system. Leaded fuel will
damage the sensor and may affect emission control and driveability.
ENGINE EXHAUST GAS CAUTION
(Carbon Monoxide)
WARNING: Never idle engine in closed areas. Never sit in a parked or stopped vehicle for any extended
amount of time with the engine running. Exhaust gases, particularly carbon monoxide, may build up.
These gases are harmful and potentially lethal. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, but can be
present with all other exhaust fumes. Therefore, if you ever smell exhaust fumes of any kind inside your
vehicle, have it inspected immediately by your dealer and have the condition corrected. Do not drive with
exhaust fumes present.
Avoid inhaling exhaust gases because they contain carbon monoxide, which by itself is colorless and
odorless. Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas that can cause unconsciousness and is potentially lethal.
If at any time you suspect that exhaust fumes are entering the bus, have the cause determined and cor-
rected as soon as possible.
The best protection against carbon monoxide entry into the bus is a properly maintained engine exhaust
system, body and body ventilation system. It is recommended that the exhaust system and body be inspected
by a competent mechanic:
•
Each time the vehicle is raised for oil change
•
Whenever a change is noticed in the sound of the exhaust system.
•
Whenever the exhaust system under body or rear of the vehicle is damaged.
Do not run engine in confined areas such as garages any more than needed to move vehicle in or out of
area. When vehicle is stopped in an unconfined area with engine running for any more than a short period,
the following precaution should be observed: (Note, This is provided the bus is equipped with combination
heating and external ventilation.)
Adjust heating or ventilation system to force outside air into bus with blower set at medium or high
speed.
Remember:
Keep air inlet grille clear of snow or other obstructions at all times to assure proper operation
of the ventilation system.
Sitting in a parked vehicle with engine running for an extended period is dangerous.
