7. On heavy (I-90 through I-132) axles,
(1)
Install lock against adjusting nut, with locking portion positioned
on either the flat side of adjusting nut or peak of adjusting nut, as
shown. If lock does not align with adjusting nut, tighten nut to
first position of alignment and install lock.
(2)
Install outer nut and torque to 125-150 ft. lbs. (169-203 N-m).
Rotate wheel in both directions. Wheel must rotate freely with
out binding. Bend locking tab out against flat side of locking
nut, as shown.
8. Install hub cap and gasket and torque mounting bolts to 11-13 ft. lbs. (15-
17.5 N-m).
9. On all models lubricated with oil, fill to oil level shown on inspection glass of hub cap with lubricants
compatible with APL Service Classification GL5 quality, meeting MIL-L-2105C lubricants. Allow oil
to circulate through bearings, and refill to oil level line.
NOTE:
See Spicer Front Non Drive Axle Maintenance Manual
SPICER REAR AXLE
1. Assemble the bearings and hub onto the axle spindle.
2. Install the dowelled wheel bearing adjustment nut. Torque the adjusting nut to 50 ft. lbs., while rotat-
ing wheel in both directions, so all bearing surfaces are in contact, then back off 1/6 to 1/4 turn to
allow wheel to rotate freely.
3. Install the nut lock.
NOTE:
Rotate the bearing nut slightly for alignment.
4. Install outer jam nut and torque to 250-275 ft-lbs.
5. Check for excessive bearing end play; not to exceed .010.
6. Install the axle shaft gasket over the studs in the hub.
7. Slide the axle shaft into place, over the studs in the hub.
8. J190-S:
Torque Nylok nuts to 217-240 ft.-lbs.
Torque steel crimp lock nuts to 275-320 ft.-lbs.
REAR AXLE VENT
All drive axles have a vent on the top of the axle housing that allows the axle to breathe as the axle
temperature changes. The vent must remain open to prevent seal failures. Note that it is normal for the vent
to ooze some lubricant.
REYCO AIR SUSPENSION MAINTENANCE
The Reyco Air Suspension, by design, requires a minimal amount of maintenance. However, suspensions
in “over-the-road” operations require periodic checks.
IMPORTANT: It is extremely important after the first 1000 to 3000 loaded miles, that all of the following
maintenance recommendations be followed. If the torque values are found to be below specification the
items must be retorqued to comply with warranty requirements and to assure long trouble-free perfor-
mance. All axle connection nut torques are high priorty items.
