1.1 Symbols and conventions
Note, tip
This symbol indicates general notes.
Numbers unless otherwise indicated are decimals (e.g.
23). Hexadecimal numbers are represented similar to the
format used in Step 7 with a preceding 16# (e.g.
16#12AB).
1.2 Explanation of the warnings
Always observe the warnings in these instructions and the
measures described to avoid hazards.
The warnings used here contain various signal words and
are structured as follows:

Measures to avoid hazards
The signal word means:
DANGER
The general warning symbol in conjunction with the
signal word DANGER identifies a hazard which, if not
avoided, will certainly result in death or serious injury.
1.3 Abbreviations
DP Decentralized peripherals. General term for
devices connected over bus systems to
Siemens controllers (see Terminology
Used on page 6).
DP-V0 Cyclical data communication with
parameterizing of the DP slaves.
Communication is always with a master
only.
DP-V1 DP-V0, with the addition of acyclic
communication for access to particular
data and communication objects (such as
device temperature)
DP-V2 DP-V1, with the addition of isochrone
mode and cross-communication between
slaves
GSD file General Station Description file:
Description file for importing to the
configuration program of the controller.
The GSD file can be downloaded from the
Balluff homepage and contains the
technical features of the sensor.
I&M Identification and Maintenance: Concept
for manufacturer- and industry-
independent identification of field devices
(electronic part label). Can be used with an
I&M capable tool.
IO Input/Output. Sensors and Actuators.
IO-Device IO-device: Sensor or actuator, e.g.
BTL7-T500
PNO PROFIBUS Nutzerorganisation e. V.
Standardization committee for PROFIBUS
and PROFINET.
PROFIBUS Process Field Bus: Bus system for linking
decentralized peripherals based on
RS485.
PROFIdrive PROFIdrive is a modular, cross-
manufacturer device profile for drive
devices which offers the same functionality
for PROFIBUS and PROFINET.
PROFINET Process Field Network: Bus system based
on PROFIBUS and based on EtherNet.
PROFIBUS
