RS232 Signal Description
A pinout and signal description of the RS-232C interface is found below. Note that The Bird
requires connections only to pins 2, 3 and 5 of the 9-pin interface connector.
The Bird's 9-pin RS-232C connector is arranged as follows:
PIN RS232
SIGNAL
1
DIRECTION DESCRIPTION
2

Serial data output from The Bird to the host
3

Holds The Bird in RESET when high
Notes:
1)
These are the Electronic Industries Association (EIA) RS232 signals names. The Bird is
configured as Data Communication equipment (DCE) and therefore Transmit Data is an input
and Receive Data is an output.
Using the 'reset on CTS' feature
The laserBIRD can be configured to perform a system reset when pin 7, its CTS line (RTS on
HOST side) is held high. This provides an alternative to issuing the RESET command, if the state
of the firmware is unknown. To enable the feature, check the appropriate box in the Settings tab of
the laserBIRD Utility.
NOTE: Users running applications in a Windows® environment who would like to enable this
feature, should take steps to ensure that command of this line (and of the serial port) is clearly
asserted.
