Software Operation - Tools for
Successful Tracking
This chapter outlines the methods for communicating with the laserBIRD
directly and details the RS232 interface protocol and command set.
Software Overview
The laserBIRD communicates with the host via RS232, using the Ascension Technology Flock of
Birds® protocol. Using the Flock of Birds protocol gives instant access to a wide range of motion
capture, virtual reality and biomechanics applications.
For users wishing to access the laserBIRD directly, there are two options:
1. Use an existing driver for the laserBIRD (i.e. SGI, Win32)
2. Communicate directly via the
Flock of Birds®
protocol
Windows
®
Driver
The Windows driver provides an interface to the Ascension Technology birds for WIN32
applications. With the exception of the initialization routines, this interface is standardized across
platforms and devices. The following Ascension Technology products are supported by this driver:
Flock of Birds, pcBIRD, miniBIRD, MotionStar, MotionStar Wireless and laserBIRD. To use the
driver, simply include the header file Bird.h in your source code, link with the library module
Bird.lib, and put the dynamic-link library Bird.dll anywhere on the DLL search path. Definitions
for the data structures and API calls documented here are in the file bird.h. Although this driver
interface will change over time, all efforts will be made to keep it backward compatible. The
Windows Driver User Manual is included in your laserBIRD documentation. The driver files are
located in the WIN32/Driver directory on the laserBIRD CD-ROM.
Flock of Birds Interface
The Flock of Birds protocol involves interpreting RS232 commands sent directly to the laserBIRD.
A short sample program utilizing many of these commands is described at the end of this chapter
and can be found in the \Direct subdirectory of the laserBIRD CD-ROM.
