Dimensional Lumber
When you are setting up each grade or species
of lumber, the first six digits of the item
number are the same. The first 2 are the
group, the next 2 are the section, and the next
2 are the width. The last 2 digits specify the
length. Then random length item (type 2) has
“00” for the length. For example: Group 51
(lumber), section 05 (hem fir), width 4”.

The last 4 digits must always be the length.
This is used in POS and Receiving to relieve
and receive the appropriate lengths.
Non-Lumber Items
Take into consideration the following:

Number according to size, such as drill
bits or screwdrivers starting with low
item numbers for small items and
increasing the item number as the items
get bigger.

Increment the item number by 5 or 10 so
you can insert new items later in the
appropriate area.
2. Catalog Number
1. In addition to the item number, each item must
have a catalog number. The catalog number is
the most common number used during POS and
Purchasing/Receiving to look up items.
2. Catalog numbers can be up to 15 characters long
including letters, numbers, punctuation marks,
and spaces. For example:
DF2410G Doug Fir 2x4-10 Green
24RLH 2x4 Random Length Hem Fir
58CDX 4x8-5/8 CDX Plywood
44CPF 4x100 4 Mil Clear Polyfilm
GWG 1 Gallon Titebond Wood Glue
3. It is required for all items. There can be no
duplicate catalog numbers.
4. If you are using price stickers, the stickers can be
printed with the catalog number.
5. Most inventory reports can be sorted and printed
in catalog number order.
