4.21.2 AXIS Timer
AXIS is a proprietary Abaco multiprocessing software environment. The PPC11A
incorporates a proprietary AXIS Timer to provide a timestamp for data that is
common to all boards in the system. A master board (usually the VME System
Controller) drives the AXIS_CLK signal at up to 25 MHz and each board increments
a 48-bit timer on the rising edge of the clock.
The AXIS_RST~ signal is used to synchronize the AXIS_CLK counters across
multiple boards.

Baseboard Management Microcontroller
The PPC11A contains a Microchip PIC18LF2580 functioning as a BMM. This is
connected to the following interfaces:
•
Serial UART interface connected to the FPGA (accessed using CS2)
•
Backplane System Management bus (I

•
I

C Bus 2 (for access to sensor devices)
•
I

C bus to XMC sites
•
VME geographic address
The BMM can reset or power-off the PPC11A in response to a request from software
running on the processor or via commands over the backplane System Management
bus.
The BMM can control the state of the
The PPC11A can function with the BMM not fitted or un-programmed.
NOTES
1.
If the BMM is used to power down a card within the VME rack, VME SYSRESET~ will be asserted,
holding all the cards in the rack in reset.
2.
The System Management Bus backplane signals (
) need to be able to operate using an
I

C electrical protocol. This is not possible if they are connected to the standard VME backplane
termination. Use 4.7k
Ω
to 5.0 Volts on both lines.
