Files not listed in Table 21 are for internal use only and must not be
modified or deleted unless directed to do so by a 3Com customer service
representative.
The root folder may contain Release Notes, Readme files, or other forms
of documentation that contain last-minute information that could not be
included in this documentation.
Database
Configuration
EMS uses a relational database to store device and application
information and present it to system users through the GUI and CLI
clients. When you initially discover devices, EMS populates the database;
therefore, this allows you to manage each device and its associated MIB
attributes without having to rediscover each device. You can also view
real-time events and traps which are logged to the database.
There are two database configuration options available for you to use:

Embedded Database — 3Com provides an internal, embedded
database within EMS. EMS uses this database by default. Embedded
databases are used primarily for smaller deployments.
■
External Database — 3Com allows you to use an external database for
larger deployments. You can either install the external database on the
EMS server itself or on a dedicated external database server. Before
installing the external database, review the minimum hardware
requirements. For a list of those requirements, see
Deploying on an
EMS Server on page 66 and Deploying on a Dedicated Server on
page 66 .
The internal embedded database is not compatible with Server Failover .
If you wish to use Server Failover you will need to use an external
database.
server.properties This file controls the database functions of the EMS
server.
NOTE: Where applicable, procedures in this guide map to
configurable sections in the server.properties file.
Sections not documented in this guide are not to be

service representative.
