Reverse gear backlash
Remove or add shim(s).
Measurement steps:

Load the reverse gear by installing
the propeller

collar

and then
tighten the propeller nut.

Set the lower unit upside down.

Attach the backlash indicator

onto
the drive shaft (12.8 mm in diameter)
as shown.

Attach the dial gauge onto the lower
unit and have the dial gauge plunger
contact the mark on the backlash
indicator.

Slowly turn the drive shaft clockwise
and counterclockwise and when the
drive shaft stops in each direction,
measure the backlash.
Propeller nut:
5 Nm (0.5 m•kg, 3.6 ft•lb)
