Outboard Rigging Guide - 2001
Jet Drive Eng. Mtg., Maintenance,
Shift Cable Instruction, Service Info.
19. Prior to main impeller installation, grease the
shaft threads, special key, and impeller bore.
Place the split plastic sleeve inside the
impeller, hold the key in the nose of the
impeller with your finger, and slide the
assembly onto the driveshaft.
20. Slip the shim washers and the nut retainer
over the end of the shaft, against the impeller,
and bring the nut up snug by hand. There are
nine shim washers. Be sure the nut retainer
does not fall into the threads and jam the nut.
NOTE: The intake assembly is now temporarily
installed to check the impeller clearances
(0.79mm [0.031"]). If the clearance is too great, it
is necessary to move some of the shim washers to
the other side of the impeller to obtain the correct
clearance.
21. Torque the nut to 17-ft lb. If the ears of the
locknut retainer do not line up with the flats
of the nut, remove the nut, invert the washer,
retorque the nut, and bend the retainer ears
over the flaps of the nut.
Always install all shims on the bottom of a new
impeller. Installing shims on top of a new
impeller may result in insufficient impeller-to-
liner clearance. This may cause scoring and
impeller or liner damage.
22. Install the intake assembly. Make sure the
lowest part of the grille is positioned at the
rear.
40 & 50 models: Use six 1/4-20 by 3/4" bolts
(no lock washers). The tightening torque is 8
ft-lb.
90, V4, & V6: Use six 5/16-18 nylock stain-
less steel nuts on the six studs. The tightening
torque is 11 ft-lb. Grease the threads.
Pumps produced before 1997 have six 5/16-
18 by 7/8" bolts instead of nuts and studs. The
tightening torque is 11 ft-lb.
NOTE: The shift-cable anchor clamp is attached
to the jetdrive with two 1/4-20 by 5/8" hex-head
cap screws which use 1/4" flat washers and lock-
nuts.
NOTE: The plastic cable end uses a 1/4" flat
washer between the end and the nut.
When starting the motor for the first time,
watch to see that cooling water comes out the
small hole at the rear, starboard side of the
motor, just below the powerhead. This is to
check your assembly of the water pump and its
connections. If no water appears within a few
seconds after starting the motor, recheck your
pump installation and correct if necessary.
