Preventive Maintenance and Troubleshooting
4
Operator Preventive Maintenance Schedules
Preventive maintenance contributes significantly to the continuing proper
operation of the printing system. The purpose of preventive maintenance is to
keep the printing system components in the best operating condition at all
times, reducing the chance of downtime and the need for further maintenance
by a service engineer.
Preventive maintenance includes inspection and cleaning done on a regular
basis, even though the printing system operation may be satisfactory and not
in need of attention.
The following schedule summarizes the preventive maintenance activities and
the interval at which they should be performed. Preventive maintenance
procedures performed on the duplex printer cabinet and the fuser cabinet are
provided in subsequent topics. Preventive maintenance procedures performed
on the post-processing equipment are provided in the appropriate vendor
documentation.

Routine Maintenance Procedures
One of the most critical maintenance activities is the daily cleaning and
inspection of the printing system. This ensures that there are no contaminants
to interfere with the proper operation of the components. All areas should be
vacuumed and cleaned to remove any accumulated paper dust, toner, and
other debris.
Cleaning and Inspecting the Printing System
When cleaning the printing system, use a vacuum cleaner that has been
approved for vacuuming toner. Toner is a fine particle dust. A standard
vacuum cleaner may not be filtered sufficiently, and may exhaust toner
particles into the air.
While cleaning, inspect all parts for obvious signs of wear or damage. If
within your responsibilities, replace each worn or defective part as soon as the
need becomes apparent. If necessary, contact the next level of support to
replace those parts not within your responsibilities.
Never inhale toner. This can be hazardous, particularly to
those with known pulmonary problems.
To clean the printing system:
1.
Stop and switch off the printing system.
2.
Open the print engine doors and radiant fuser cabinet doors.
3.
Clear the paper path of any stray paper fibres.
4.
Using a lint-free cloth, wipe away any paper dust, paper cuttings and
other debris from the interior and exterior surfaces along the paper path.
Do not use abrasive powders or pads on surfaces. These
will damage the finish.
5.
Using the vacuum hose with the nozzle attachment, remove any
accumulated paper dust and toner from the components along the paper
path. Vacuumed areas include,
areas around the print engines, including the toner rollers
web sensors
inside the radiant fuser cabinet
areas around the output pacer
end of roll sensor on the unwinder
inside and around each post-processing device
6.
Using a lint-free cloth, wipe away any remaining dust.
7.
Close all access doors.
8.
Follow normal power up procedure to run jobs.
