19. Differential Assemblies are FOUR PINION TYPE. Below are detailed instructions for
stripping and re-assembly.
STRIPPING DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLY - FOUR PINION TYPE:
Remove the bolts holding the two halves of the differential case together and lift off
the non-flanged half - having the assembly sitting on the flange-half trunnion.
Remove the top side gear and then ease out the crosspin and pinion mates, together
with the two halves of the shaft spacer if fitted, from the lower half of the differential
case, taking care not to lose the thrust washers fitted behind all the gears.
Remove the lower side gear from the bottom half of the differential case, once again
taking care not to lose the thrust washer.
NOTE: Ensure that the position of gears relative to case halves is noted for re-
assembly. Clean all components prior to re-assembly.
20.
RE-ASSEMBLY OF DIFFERENTIAL - FOUR PINION TYPE:
Take up the flanged half of the differential case and fit appropriate side gear
together with the thrust washer on the back face.
Fit the shaft spacer in the cross pin (if originally fitted).
Refit the cross pin with the pinion mates and shaft spacer thrust washers. This will
ensure correct meshing of pinion mates and side gear into the lower half of the
differential case.
Place the second side gear on top of the assembly, ensuring correct meshing of
gear teeth. Place the second side gear thrust washer on top of the side gear.
Replace the other half of the differential case, ensuring that the identification marks
stamped on both halves are adjacent to one another. This ensures that the
differential case is correctly aligned.
NOTE: It is not permissible to assemble two halves from different differential cases
as several of the machining operations are carried out after assembly of the two
halves of the case.
Refit the bolts and tighten to the torque figure shown in chart 1 according to the size
of the bolts and axle. The tightening should be carried out by tightening single bolts
at opposite sides of the differential case to ensure that pressure is uniform and NOT
by following round the diameter of the differential case.
NOTE: Loctite ‘Studlock’ or similar locking compound should be applied to bolts.
