STEERING GEAR T7903 (TYPE 462 LONG) - NIMBUS & SPRITE MODELS
ADJUSTMENTS:
The major adjustments are accomplished by shims and are three in number:-
1.
Adjustment of bearings between which the cam revolves.
2.
Adjustment of end play of rocker shaft (item 26).
3.
Adjustment of engagement between roller (item 26) and cam (item 6).
ADJUSTMENT (1)
Inspection for proper cam bearing adjustment. Jack up front wheels. Turn steering wheel
about one turn to right from straight ahead driving position. Secure in this position to
prevent any oscillation when the front wheels are shaken violently. This can be done by
ty-ing one spoke to a convenient point on the right side of the machine and holding the
wheel against it as a brace. Grip column with other hand just below steering wheel with
side of finger barely touching lower end of steering wheel hub. Now have an assistant
shake front ‘ wheels hard sideways. This will enable any end play in cam bearings to be felt
by up and down movement of inner column at wheel hub. Any end play must be removed
by adjust-ment but be sure end play is felt and do not be confused with play or give in the
box-nose rocker shaft bushes (item 30). Cam bearing adjustment should be correct before
any further adjustment of gear is made.
Cam Bearing Adjustment:
It will be noted that between the box casting and the bottom cap (item 16) is a number of
thin shims (item 14). End play of the cam between its bearing may, therefore, be taken up
by taking out one or more of these shims, thus allowing the bearing outer race backed up
by the bottom cap (item 16) to enter further into the steering box and thus come closer to
the cam (item 6). When this adjustment has been correctly made, it should be such that
after the bottom cap (item 16) is again fastened securely to the box casting by the screws
(item 18), the cam and steering wheel should revolve freely, but there should be absolutely
no end play.
ADJUSTMENT (2)
Inspection of end play in rocker shaft. Turn steering wheel to each extreme and then back
again one eighth turn. Gripping drop arm (item 9) at steering box nose, rocker shaft (item
26) should rotate freely without any small amount of end play. If end play is present adjust
as follows:- Loosen lock nut (item 19), on back of cover plate (item 22), and tighten up
adjusting screw (item 21), until all end play of rocker shaft is removed.
Important:
Do not
forget to retighten lock nut (item 19).
ADJUSTMENT (3)
Inspection for proper mesh of rocker shaft roller in cam. (This inspection should never be
made without first correcting adjustment 1 and 2).
Turn steering wheel to the mid position of its complete travel from lock to lock (drag link
previously disconnected). Shake drop arm (item 9) to determine amount of slack or lost
motion. If this lost motion exceeds one thirty-second of an inch, adjustment should be
made.
It will be seen that the position of contact between the rocker shaft roller (item 26) and cam
(item 6), is offset from the centre line of the cam and that a number of thin shims are
located behind the rocker shaft, and between the thrust washers (item 27) and (item 29).
By removing one or more of these thin shims (item 28), therefore, the rocker shaft (item
26) and the roller which is carried by it, are permitted to enter further into the steering box,
and make closer contact with the cam.
LUBRICATION:
On no account must grease or solidified oils be used in manually operated steering gears.
The correct grade of oil is SAE.90. We recommend Mobilube HD 90.
