To monitor the debugging stream, open a second TCP

IP socket con-
nection to port 8886 (note the di

erent port number). The debugging
port can be used independently of the commanding port, allowing
convenient debugging of user applications controlling the LDC500
over GPIB, RS-232, or the ethernet port.
4.4.1
Connection example
The following example may help clarify how to establish Ethernet-
based communications with the LDC500. This example assumes a
Windows-based computer with HyperTerminal available for direct
TCP
/
IP connections.
4.4.1.1 Network address configuration
If the LDC500 is being connected to an existing network, first obtain a
network address for the instrument. You will also need to determine
the netmask value and default gateway; these should then be pro-
grammed into the LDC500 from the front panel. See sections 3.4.1.3
and 3.4.1.5.
It is also possible to directly connect the LDC500 to a computer using
an Ethernet “crossover” cable. In this case, it is usually su
ffi
cient to
use the default network configuration, beginning with the IP number
169.254.xxx.xxx
(the so-called “link local” address range).
